"Srila Prabhupada used to say that the chanting of Hare Krishna is exactly like the crying of a baby for the mother. Only I am helpless. Please save me."
You sit down for your rounds worrying that you do not sound right — the voice is off, the rhythm slips, the words tangle, the syllable does not come out gracefully. Gurudev says, right before these words, that this is not the point at all — it does not matter whether you sing in tune. Srila Prabhupada used to say that chanting Hare Krishna is exactly like a baby crying for its mother: the baby does not choose its words or watch its tone, it simply cries, because it is helpless and needs her. So on your rounds you are not a performer polishing style, but a child with no support besides the cry itself. Let your voice crack, let the beat slip — sit down and cry out as a child cries: I am helpless, save me.
Today, do not correct the sound — just cry out, the way a child cries for its mother.
