The Bhāgavatam gives a long list of incarnations, and Kṛṣṇa is named there among the rest. Then at the end Sūta Gosvāmī settles it: those listed are portions and portions of portions, while Kṛṣṇa is Bhagavān Himself. This has a name — svayaṁ-rūpa, the form of the Lord that depends on no other form for its sweetness or its opulence. Gurudeva says why this must be heard: pride visits even those nowhere near the level of Brahmā. To hear "īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ" and realize it sets a person in his own place in one motion.
