Rāmānanda climbs another rung: he offers the verse about one who has realized himself beyond the body — he neither laments nor hankers, he is equal to all beings, and out of that serenity he takes to bhakti. Mahāprabhu again: this is external, tell me something more. Gurudeva explains why. This is bhakti mixed with knowledge, and one who approaches devotion through jñāna reaches only as far as śānta-rati. Peace is there — service is not. A staircase ending on a landing with no door: you may stand there calmly, there is nowhere further up. The absence of suffering is not yet a relationship.
