"Mahaprabhu is showing us how to enter into nāma-bhajana. What is he doing? He's lamenting: 'Alas, alas, I'm offensive, I'm unfortunate.' The key to enter into nāma-bhajana is anutāpa. If the mercy wasn't coming, you wouldn't be feeling repentance."
When a quiet "alas, I am so far away" arises during japa, don't chase it off. Mahaprabhu Himself opens nāma-bhajana precisely through anutāpa: His Śikṣāṣṭaka begins with repentance. According to the Bhāgavatam, the very capacity to grieve is already kṛpā: if you're capable of that feeling, the mercy of the Name has already touched you and is working within your heart. Gaudiya prema hides in the humble little box of humility, which the proud walk past without a glance.
Today don't push away the tears in japa — this isn't a failure, it's an entrance.
