"If you have an old friend and he suddenly shows up at your house, you have to give that person the full attention. So when we chant we should know we're receiving a person, and that person is our best friend. If we're inattentive, it's kind of impersonalism."
Imagine: you're home, and suddenly a close friend you haven't seen in a long time is at your door. You can't ignore him while scrolling your phone. You'll drop everything, seat him, offer water, food, give him your full attention. The Holy Name comes to you the same way — as a person, as your dearest friend. If you chant Him while your attention wanders, that's a quiet form of impersonalism — you're treating your Friend like background noise.
