Sometimes the Name feels tasteless, flat — you chant, but there's no sweetness. Don't conclude from this that something is wrong with the Name. For someone with jaundice, even sugar on the tongue tastes bitter — but the sugar isn't at fault, the disease is. And the remedy is paradoxical: keep taking that very sweetness. Gradually the jaundice recedes, and the taste returns on its own. The Holy Name is the sweetest of the sweet, madhuraṁ madhuram, even if you don't feel it right now.
